The first group leaders meeting of this year was held on Tuesday 9th February in the Hall at St. Mary’s RC Cathedral in Regent Street.
The meeting was well attended and discussion took place on a variety of topics, which affect the groups. The acting Treasurer, Clive, encouraged leaders to present their Financial Statements early so that they could be included in the accounts, which will be audited in time for our AGM in March.
Thanks to all leaders who made the effort to attend. The next meeting will be on the 4th Tuesday in September 2010.

We have a new Webmaster, Barbara, who has already improved our website enormously. We are very grateful that she has taken on the task of bringing us up to speed. Barbara will work with members to ensure that information is available and kept up to date. So please let her have details of your groups and members activities.
Anyone interested in joining the group should attend our regular meeting in the foyer at Glyndwr University before the Main Meeting.

Only the Thursday group met in January for the first meeting of 2010. As the extreme weather meant we had not been able to start work in the garden, it was surprising how much there was to discuss. There are a lot of jobs usually done in January and early February, which had to be delayed until the temperature rose, especially deciduous tree pruning. This is always done when the trees are dormant but if done in very low temperatures the frost can enter the newly cut surface, doing so much damage the trees may die.
We had a very enjoyable afternoon and my group left with a list of the things to do as soon as conditions allow.

Our thanks go to Emlyn for his talk on the origins of the Congregational Church in Wrexham in our January meeting. The group continues to flourish and we welcome "visitors" if any U3A member wishes to attend a meeting when a topic is of interest to them. The programme for the next few months is on page 2. Please note that all meetings commence at 1.30pm

January's meeting had to be postponed due to the
inclement weather. Gwyneth led the February meeting with a discussion on
"Winter in Music"
We listened to some Street songs from the
Elizabethan era and Vivaldi's Winter in addition to other music which
invoked the feeling of cold winds and snow.
The next meeting will concentrate on Dvorak.

Our first walk for 2010 is on Thursday 18th March 2010 from Llangollen Pavilion to the Horseshoe Falls, having lunch at the Chain Bridge Hotel
Meet in the Pavilion car park by 11.00 am to walk at 11.15am, ensure vehicles are parked on the left side of the area to be clear of school transport, which uses the central space. This is an easy short walk to get the group gently in its stride after the Christmas feasting. There will be time after lunch if anyone wishes to stay longer in Llangollen or walk further along the canal path at their discretion.
Please ensure you have completed the required form prior to the walk, especially giving your mobile phone number.
All the 2010 planned walks, times, meeting points, distance, dates etc will be available at the 16th March meeting.

This group will not meet on the first Sunday of the month but at the group's preferred dates, hence its title. There are spaces within the group for anyone who enjoys dining out at various venues with company and cheerful conversation. Contact Judith for further information through the usual channels about our April meeting place.
In December the group had a short walk at Coddington before retiring to the Grosvenor Arms at Aldford for a lovely Christmas Lunch.
The group has grown over time and members attend regularly. In January we walked the Sandstone Trail.

On April 14th the "All Wales" Conference is being held in the University. Delegates from all U3A groups in Wales will be attending including at least two from Wrexham. The topic for this meeting, the second in our history, is
" COMMUNICATION" which should be very interesting. The past Chairman of the U3A Trust, Jean Goodeve, will be attending as well as the present Vice Chairman, Beth Butler, and our Welsh representative on the EDC, Patsy Godfrey. It will give us an opportunity to sell our area to the executive of the association.
On September 14th the Annual Study Day for the North Wales Association of U3As is being held at the Catrin Finch Centre at Glyndwr University. All U3As in N. Wales will be represented so there will be a limited allocation for our group, about 40 places. In the past these Study Days have been held in Bangor, which has meant considerable travel for us.
The theme for the day is "Landscape and Environment of North Wales" The cost will be approximately £10.00 include a Buffet Lunch.
We have to have numbers for June so if you are interested, please book your place by the end of May.
POSTAL CHARGES
It would appear that although we have a healthy Bank Account following three years of growth in our branch, the last year showed that the cost of posting the Newsletter to those who do not attend the monthly meeting is becoming prohibitive. If we were to continue in the present arrangement we would have a deficit in our budget for the next year.
An alternative arrangement would be to ask members who need to have Newsletters posted to provide the Secretary with stamped addressed envelopes.
This needs urgent thought.
There is a membership form under CONTACTS in the U3A Website, which may be suitable for paying in your subscription. Check this out with Derrick.
